Happy Victory Day!

Did you know?
Rhode Island celebrates Victory Day today, 9 August 2021 (observed on the second Monday in August.)

Rhode Island is the only state that marks the end of World War II with this state holiday.

President Harry S. Truman declared 14th August as Victory Day in 1946

RI Residents many residents refer to it as V-J Day (Victory in Japan Day)

What is the history?
It commemorates the end of second world war when Japan’s surrender was announced on August 14th 1945.

“Rhode Island’s continuation of this holiday is said to have been reinforced due to the high number of veterans who retired to the state. Indeed, residents of the state suffered a higher proportion of war deaths than nearly any other state. It is also a state with strong union representation, so once a holiday made it onto the state list it is difficult to drop it. In 1990, the state General Assembly sought to clarify the meaning of the holiday and passed a resolution affirming that, though the holiday would continue, it was “not a day to express satisfaction in the destruction and death caused by nuclear bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”

While Rhode Island may be the only US state to observe the end of the war, in Europe, a holiday to mark the end of World War II is commonplace. The war in Europe ended late in the evening of May 8th 1945. This means countries like France and the Czech Republic observe Victory Day on 8th May, while countries further east, particularly those who were part of the Soviet Union celebrate Victory day on May 9th.

Planning for your visit

Victory Day is a state holiday — not a federal holiday. State and local government offices are closed while Federal offices, including U.S. Postal Mail Service, remain open. Public transport may operate on a different schedule.

5 million stars đꤩ

If I could give Ronnie and his space 5 million stars, I would. He is a spectacular host with such an elegant, historic space. The space, while historic and special was also modern and well-appointed. It’s such an incredible location, in walking distance to everything you’d need. The farmhouse featured beautiful, homey touches and just had an aura of absolute relaxation. As you can gather, I can’t recommend it enough. After my last Airbnb experience, I was about ready to never use the platform again - the Cole Farmhouse and Ronnie’s excellent hospitality changed that for me. I hope Airbnb gives him a medal. In short, it would be a privilege to book this place and I can’t wait to return.

Home Away from Home

Wed, Jun 12 – Sun, Jun 16, 2019 (VRBO)

In town did a few days to visit family, and we absolutely loved the historic farm house. It was a home away from home and such a great place to relax in the evening. The history of the house is amazing. We got farm fresh eggs from the chickens out back, and some yummy pastries Ronnie left for us. For those with children it’s a dream because there was all the little things that make life easy, washer and dryer with detergent, dish soap, sheets and towels, coffee, full kitchen and the list goes on. When we had to change some dates he was so gracious and was able to accommodate what we needed! We will definitely stay here again whenever we are visiting RI, and we can’t wait to explore more of the immediate area. Thanks again Ronnie!

Comfortable and charming

Fri, Oct 19 – Sun, Oct 21, 2018 (VRBO)

This place is beyond fabulous. I love historic houses, so this was the perfect place for me. The floors slope and the massive fireplace in the center of the great room is a sight to behold. But the amenities are all modern — from the super luxurious bathroom to the comfortable beds. It is a beautiful neighborhood and easily accessible to everything Providence has to offer. I cannot say enough good things.

Wonderful property on Providence’s East Side

Wed, Jun 12 – Sun, Jun 16, 2019 (VRBO)

This home was amazing! All the comforts of 2019 in a historic home built in 1731. This is a great area of Providence ..safe and quiet surrounded by beautiful older homes. Short walk to cute restaurants on Hope St. My boys loved staying in this home (they loved their upstairs bedroom…and we loved them having their own space as well!) and they loved interacting with Ronnie’s chickens. All of our family would stay here again in a heartbeat.
